Some are saying that COVID-19 helped earth on a distinguished level and some are arguing that it is just a killing element and today or tomorrow it will end everything. However, almost everyone admits that there are some direct or indirect effects of COVID-19 on the environment and Mother Earth, which had been seen or observed world-wide during the lockdown period.

We don’t want to hurt anyone and especially people who lost their loved ones/ family members. We also understand that people worldwide are going through a tough time due to a drastic increase in unemployment. But as a team of observers, we found at least some positive things and we are representing the same observation on the Effect of COVID-19 on the environment, Mother Earth, and other species.

After the outbreak of CORONAVIRUS, a lot of things have changed. It took a lot of lives, left many unemployed, and some starved to death. It spread from China to almost the whole world, so after it was declared a pandemic by the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, Governments worldwide took various steps to contain the spread of COVID-19, they released guidelines, restricted physical movement, directed us to follow the prevention measurements, along with imposing a total lockdown.

The lockdown did slow the rate of spread of infection and in addition to that, it also helped nature to recover. And yes we are here to talk about “Effects of COVID-19 on Environment, Mother Earth, and Animals”.

No one thought that they are going to see mother nature recover itself at least not in their lifetime. But a virus comes and wipes out like half of the lives as the virus has its own infinity gauntlet. It stopped all the work, industries got closed, power plants shut down people stayed home, no vehicles on the road, etc.

Coronavirus left a huge impact on the environment as we can clearly see this in cities with higher air pollution like New Delhi and other big cities. During the first few weeks of the lockdown people of Jalandhar posted pictures on social media of The Himalayan range became visible from their rooftop as air pollution decreases and the area around India Gate is also clearly visible from a distance,  which shows that nature is not going to take decades to heal itself if we take care of it.

It took crores to clean The GANGA but because of the lockdown, the river became clearer due to decreased human activities. The emission of greenhouse gasses is one of the major causes of global warming, which during the lockdown is lowered to a higher extent.  During the lockdown roads were empty, only the essentials services vehicles were allowed to move due to which air pollution decreased and made the air breathable and clearer.

 

Effect of Lockdown in India 2According to Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB) due to the reduction in on-road vehicles, there was a reduction of 51% Nitrogen dioxide levels and 32%reduction in Carbon dioxide(CO2)  as compared to March 21  to March 22-23. Some environmentalists think that the carbon levels will go up again after the situation becomes normal.

Nature reclaims public spaces during corona virus lockdown

As there were no people on the roads many birds and animals were seen roaming freely. They were now not threatened by humans. People also learned a lesson that how animals felt when they are caged.

People living in flood-prone areas faced a lot of difficulty during the lockdown as there were no vehicles moving. Also, big storms and hurricanes were a problem during this pandemic because there was a fear of getting infected and people have to move to safer areas.

This year is the worst if we see it with a climate point of view, as we have seen Amphan in Odisha and West Bengal and Cyclone Nisarga in Maharastra.

Harmful effects of COVID-19

The coronavirus and lockdown no doubt helped nature but it took a lot of lives, infection of the virus was not the only cause of people’s death but there were hunger poverty and some climatic change. After the lockdown was put up many daily wagers lost their job, which was their only way to live and feed their families.

A lot of workers lost their lives while moving to their homes after they were left homeless and jobless. This year the food delivery chain was not proper due to the lockdown which caused wastage of a lot of food and the farmers were also not paid for what hard work they put in growing the food, which was also their livelihood.

The lockdown is not going to be there forever, so what happens to the environment when it ends? What happens to the animals then?

After all, this is over, the government may stop the use of non-renewable sources of energy as the government has also seen the impact of coronavirus and lockdown which helped the nature to heal and made the air cleaner, breathable and the water clearer than they were ever. Instead of using non-renewable sources of energy industries may use renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy, and hydroelectricity.

We all know there are not a lot of people who can work from home, so they have to go back to work and the lockdown will only help nature for the short term. The history reports that after a huge drop in pollution there is a sudden rebound in the pollution levels and that is not good for us.

So, as we have seen there are both positive and negative effects of coronavirus on environment, on us as well as the animals. On one hand, it makes the air and water clearer and breathable but on the other, but it is also responsible for taking a lot of lives around the globe, but maybe our mother nature needs or some time to help to heal herself and punish the human for all the cruelty, harshness, and inhuman activity.
