Fitbit Versa 2 Design

Fitbit versa 2 is a square-cornered face. The colour AMOLED touchscreen’s thick bezels make it appear a bit old but it is nice, that’s not cool for a premium fitness wearable.  There are no complaints with the display though; colours look very nice on it and it can be pretty bright too. In the versa 2’s settings, you can set the display to always-on, but it has a big effect on battery life. We will discuss that in the performance section.

It is comfortable to wear. The band is quite comfortable overall; its aluminium shell also feels nice. You can wear it for multiple days without any issue; you can take it off for charging after workout or shower.

On the left side of the versa 2, there’s just one button, it acts as a back button if you press it once and it will launch the exercise app if you long-press it. On the right, there’s a microphone since the versa 2 supports Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Fitbit has been acquired by Google, we can be certain that Google assistant will feature in the future Fitbit product also or instead.

At this price point, the versa 2 is swim-proof which is a must-have feature. It comes with a charging cradle which is a little bit disappointing to see but not surprising because Fitbit has a history of shipping every new product with a new charge. There’s a clip-like mechanism in the cradle that you have to slot the versa 2 into. There are charging pins on only one side, the watch can easily be inserted the wrong way round by mistake, and unless you make sure the versa 2 is in the cradle the right way, it may not charge at all.

Performance and Battery Life

It is quite sad to see that the Fitbit versa 2 does not have an in-built GPS, for a premium fitness watch that supports a lot of workout modes. You can only use your paired Smartphone’s GPS sensors to track workouts with the versa 2, which is the Fitbit app, whether it’s active or not, will always need access to your location. This brings up privacy concerns.

Standard series of tests were run on the versa 2 to gauge its performance. Firstly, walking 1000 steps while counting manually each step, to see if the versa 2’s step tracker is accurate. It logged 1,006 very accurate steps. Then walking 1km on a route measured using a car’s odometer to check on the accuracy of the GPS. It logged 1.05km here. Note, that this is the paired phone’s GPS accuracy; it shouldn’t be used to judge the wearable itself.

The heart rate sensor of the Fitbit versa 2 is properly accurate. The readings of the Fitbit versa 2 corresponded with how tired we were feeling during workouts, which is good. You can also track a lot of other workouts like swimming, elliptical training, running, yoga etc. with it, which is also good.

Wearing the Fitbit versa 2 through the night to see if sleep tracking was trustworthy, and it was pleasant that it was. The app assigns a sleep score to tell you how well you slept, and it was very helpful. The sleep scores did reflect on how we had slept.

If we did not enable the always-on display option, the battery life of the Fitbit versa 2 will last longer. On a single charge, with notifications enabled and wearing the device almost 24/7, the device will last a full week. This is great, but the battery life will drop to two days if you want an always-on display, which is poor. It is a nice thing to see important information like the time and battery level at glance, but the drop in battery life is a bit of disappointment.

UI and Companion App

The Fitbit versa 2 is a capable smartwatch, note, there are some things that you should be aware of. You cannot make calls on the versa 2, but you can answer or reject incoming phone calls on it. It supports quick replies for notifications. Note, only on android. Music can be transferred from your computer to the versa 2, even if you want to store songs on the device up to 2.5Gb, or you use Spotify or any other music streaming services.
