Know Vyom Mitra, ISRO’s robot which will travel to space

So In this article, we are talking about ISRO’s robot which will travel to space “Vyom Mitra”.

Have you heard about Sophia a humanoid robot? Probably yes! Because In 2017, Sophia was given citizenship of Saudi Arabia, with it Sophia became the first robot to be given legal person-hood anywhere in the world. Sophia is actually a social humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. After Sophia, here we have “Vyom Mitra”, a humanoid robot which will travel to Space.

Vyom Mitra is the new space-faring humanoid robot developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to make the dream of the country of landing a manned space shuttle in space in December 2021 and it will be the one in control of the unmanned Ganganyan Spacecraft.

What does Vyom Mitra mean?

Vyom means space or sky and Mitra means Friend, thus the Vyom Mitra stands for a friend in the sky, Vyom Mitra is a half-humanoid robot that can communicate with astronauts, responds to different queries and recognize them. The sole aim of this humanoid robot is to provide guides and information it gained during the program.

Aside from being a humanoid robot, it will be the first Indian “woman” to ride in space. This robot doesn’t have legs and can only move sideward and forward. Meaning there are limitations to what it can do. With sensors, she can detect and give out warnings if there should be a change in the environment inside the cabin and change the air condition.

At the inaugural session of the Human Spaceflight and Exploration, she was able to grab the attention of the attendant as she introduces herself to the ISRO Chairman K.Sivan and Principal Scientific Adviser K.VijayRaghavan at the symposium on the human flight.
During the introduction below are her words:

I am Vyom Mitra. I can do switch panel operations, environment control and life support systems, and converse with the astronauts, recognize them and also respond to their queries.
ISRO Chairman K. Sivan also said that the humanoid will stimulate the human functions needed for space before real astronauts take off before August 2020. Two trial flights without a crew will take place with Vyom Mitra in – the first will be carried out around December 2020 and the second In July 2021.

Among the crew are four Indian Air force pilots and they are currently undergoing an 11 months training program in Russia.

What Role Does Vyom Mitra Have To Play?

During the introduction of herself at the recent inaugural session of the Human Spaceflight and Exploration, she said, “I can monitor through modules, asses the environment, provide life supports the system, recognize astronauts and respond to queries.

Like other nations that have carried out human space flight with animals on board, so instead, it will fly humanoid robot Vyom Mitra for better understanding of what weightlessness and radiation can do to humans during the stay in the space.

Aside from functions, it is to perform, it can speak Hindi and English and perform multiple tasks that humans are meant to do in space. It can mimic all human activities, recognize human and respond to queries meant for it.

ISRO chairman K Sivan stated that The humanoid was functioning well, and it has the human simulation system. The ISRO will observe how the human system will function and behave in the environment control life support system. He further added, “The humanoid project has almost completed”.
