Some of these apps may also share user data with third parties. Once you reach a payment threshold, you can request a payout.

Which apps were linked to these ads?

Mashable found TikTok users posting screenshots of the ads on Reddit. They said the ads sent them to third-party apps such as Playful Rewards or QuickRewardz.

• A Playful Rewards spokesperson told Mashable the ads “are not being run directly by Playful Rewards and may be coming from a third-party advertising source.”
• QuickRewardz appears to have been removed from the Google Play store. It’s unclear when, or whether Google or the developer removed it. Mashable had contacted the company behind it, Team Rewardz, at the time of its report.

Step-by-Step: What to Do When You See the Pop-Up

1. Don’t tap it. Real TikTok messages won’t promise cash for watching videos, because no such program exists.
2. Check the claim against reality. Ask yourself whether it asks you to do nothing but watch and scroll. Since TikTok says no viewer-payment program exists, any prompt promising one is misleading.
3. Be wary of “official” looks. An ad can imitate TikTok’s look and imply a formal relationship with TikTok or other companies. That doesn’t make it legitimate. Being shown on TikTok, YouTube or Facebook doesn’t mean the advertiser is trustworthy.
4. Don’t hand over personal information. Be cautious about any sign-up that asks for private details.
5. Report the ad. TikTok says it prohibits fraudulent activity in ads and user-generated content, and removes such content and accounts when they’re detected or reported.

Don’t panic. Work through these steps to limit the damage.

1. Stop at the sign-up. If you haven’t entered any details yet, close the page or app.
2. Uninstall the app if you downloaded one from the ad.
3. Think about what you shared. Some reward apps have terms that let the company resell your information or put you on robocall lists. A 2023 lawsuit by the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission raised this concern, according to Mashable.
4. Change passwords if you reused a password from any other account when signing up.
5. Watch for spam calls, messages and emails in the following weeks, and don’t respond to them.

One Trustpilot reviewer of Playful Rewards wrote: “They’re a scam. I recently accumulated enough coins to cash out $60, and then promptly got my account permanently locked. When I asked their customer support, they claimed it was because I progressed too fast on a game.”
