Nothing Ear (Open) Review: Style, Comfort & Clear Sound

I’ve been wanting to try something from Nothing for a while now, not just because their products look cool, but because they actually offer quality products at a reasonable price. But until recently, I didn’t have anything old enough to replace with a Nothing device. Luckily, living in New Jersey, I finally got a chance to try one of their latest products. And today I am here with its review. So here is Nothing Ear (Open) Review.

Before we jump into the earbuds themselves, I want to take you a bit into the past, to explain what makes this brand special and why I’ve been so eager to include one of its products in my daily life.

There was a golden era, when hands-free earphones were part of a professional identity, especially among corporate users. Gadgets were exciting back then. But over time, everything started to look the same. Especially in the gadgets sector, smartphones and other electronic devices started to look similar from the outside, people started to worry more about weight and thickness, so brands also stopped thinking about experiments and innovations.

Then in 2021, Nothing stepped into this dull tech world and shook things up. Their first product, the Nothing Ear (1), came with a transparent case and semi-transparent earbuds, a small detail, but a bold and refreshing choice for a new brand. It wasn’t just about how it looked. The company has been taking risks with both hardware and software, and that’s how it started carving a space for itself.

Fast forward to 2024, Nothing doubled its annual revenue to over $500 million and crossed $1 billion in lifetime sales. Now it’s well on its way to hitting $1 billion in a single year. That’s some serious momentum. Nothing has now become known for design, innovation, and doing things differently, which is exactly why I wanted to own something from this brand.

So, back to our review, the Nothing Ear (Open). If you’ve followed the brand, you probably already expect something different from this product. Let’s find out if it lives up to the hype.

About the Nothing Ear (Open) earbuds

With an average customer rating of 4.2 stars on Amazon.com, the Nothing Ear (Open) earbuds bring a fresh take to the world of wireless audio. With a unique open-ear design and a stylish transparent look, they not only sound good but also stand out visually. Built for comfort and stability, each earbud weighs just 8.1 grams and has a 50-degree tilt with soft, skin-friendly silicone ear hooks, so they stay in place whether you’re running, walking, or working.

Under the hood, the sound is handled by a stepped dynamic driver, titanium-coated diaphragm, and lightweight parts that deliver crisp highs, deep bass, and overall clean sound. You also get dual AI mics for crystal-clear calls, and a Sound Seal system to reduce sound leakage, giving you more privacy in public spaces.

With Bluetooth 5.3, low-lag mode for gaming, and customizable EQ settings through the Nothing X app, the experience feels smart and flexible. Plus, you can control music or calls with simple pinch controls on the earbud stem, no tapping is required.

The charging case is ultra-compact, just 19 mm thin, with a clean transparent design and IP54 water and dust resistance, making it ideal for travel or gym use. On a full charge, the buds can last long enough for day-to-day use, and with the case, you get up to 30 hours of battery life.

One standout feature is the integration with ChatGPT, but this only works when paired with a Nothing or CMF phone. It’s a futuristic touch for those already in the Nothing ecosystem. Nothing Ear (Open) is a great mix of style, smart tech, and sound clarity, designed for people who want something different from the usual in-ear buds, without sacrificing comfort or performance.

Nothing Ear (Open) Review

Nothing Ear (Open) Review

Nothing Ear Open is available on Amazon.com at a discounted price was $129; earlier, the price was $149. In the box, I received a pair of earbuds, a Type-C cable, a user guide, and a warranty information document. The earbuds were around 30% charged at the time of receiving, but I still connected them to the socket to make them fully charged. The packaging was good and simple, but the earbuds were special, and know my experience with this Nothing Ear (Open) Review.

Design, Build Quality & Comfort

The Nothing Ear (Open) delivers exactly what you’d expect from Nothing, a product that looks as unique as it feels. The transparent-topped charging case instantly reflects the brand’s design language, with its long and slim body and smooth curved ends. It’s definitely one of the coolest-looking cases out there and feels futuristic without being flashy.

Ear Open earbuds

While the case isn’t exactly compact (measuring 0.75 x 4.96 x 1.73 inches), its thin profile makes it easy to carry in a trouser pocket without adding bulk or discomfort. At 62.4g, it feels sturdy yet light enough to go unnoticed in your bag or pocket.

The earbuds weigh just 8.1 grams each, and the curved ear hooks wrap gently around your ears, offering a comfortable and secure fit without putting any extra pressure. Once they’re on, you can genuinely forget you’re wearing them, they’re that comfortable. The silicone bands feel soft against the skin, and the slightly weighted aluminum bulbs at the end of each earbud help keep everything in place naturally.

The brand name will appear on both earbuds as well as on the case’s top right corner, with some margin from both ends. Since Nothing is already known for uniqueness, everything may seem unique. One example is the color coding of both earbuds, which means instead of engraving L and R on respective earbuds, they made it easy with red and white circles on respective earbuds, and then the matching slot in the case.

They are comfortable to wear, but to wear them perfectly, you will require some practice. You can consider it a small issue because modern-day earbuds are easier to wear. However, once they’re positioned, they stay secure even during movement, making them perfect for everyday activities, in our tests, they hold up well during light physical activity.

Review of Nothing Ear (Open)

Since they are comfortable to wear and you can forget you’re wearing them, having an IP54 rating is a godsend. Which offers dust resistance and protection against light water splashes. Overall, when it comes to design, feel, and comfort, the Nothing Ear (Open) stands out not just for its unique look, but for delivering one of the most comfortable open-ear fits out there.

Control

The Nothing Ear (Open) earbuds come with squeeze controls, and surprisingly, they work really well. Every squeeze gives a nice click-like feedback, making the controls feel responsive and reliable. You get a range of gestures like single, double, and even triple squeezes, along with long hold and squeeze-and-hold options, giving you enough control without needing to touch your phone.

Review of Nothing Ear Open earbuds

With these gestures, you can do everything from play/pause, skip tracks, adjust volume, and even activate your voice assistant. One of the standout features here is the customization, through the Nothing X app, you can assign different actions to the left and right earbuds based on your preference. For example, you can set a long hold on the left earbud for volume down, and a squeeze-and-hold on the right for volume up. This makes it easy to control music and volume using just one earbud.

There’s no in-ear detection (which would automatically pause/play when you take them off), but that’s quite normal for open-ear earbuds, the technology doesn’t work well without a proper in-ear seal. It also doesn’t have swipe gestures like some high-end models, but the Nothing Ear (Open) still feels efficient for intuitive and flexible control options. The combination of squeeze control and customization gives you enough freedom to manage everything easily, especially for those who prefer minimal touch but maximum functionality.

Battery Life

Battery performance on the Nothing Ear (Open) strikes a solid balance between compact size and long-lasting use. If you’re in a hurry, the earbuds also support fast charging, so just 10 minutes in the case gives you around 2 hours of playback, which is super handy when you’re heading out. In real-world usage, I typically get around 6 to 7 hours per charge, and with the case, the total goes up to 28 hours. which is more than enough for daily activities like calls, music, or workouts.

Nothing Ear (Open) Packaging
So while it may not offer the longest total battery life, the Nothing Ear (Open) finds a nice middle ground, combining decent battery life with a compact, practical form factor.

Sound Quality

When it comes to open-ear earbuds, expectations around sound need to be adjusted. Unlike in-ear models, these earbuds don’t form a seal in your ears. That means audio leakage is expected, and you won’t get active noise cancellation. Still, despite these physical limitations, the Nothing Ear (Open) performs impressively well and might just surprise you with its clarity and balance.

Nothing Ear (Open) Sound Tecgnology

The earbuds are powered by 14.2mm dynamic drivers, and thanks to smart tuning, they deliver clear mids, detailed treble, and a decent amount of bass, especially for an open-ear design. You won’t get deep sub-bass here (which is common for all open earbuds), but the mid-bass, vocals, and instrumentation come through rich and natural, particularly at lower volume levels (below 60%). This is where the drivers shine, offering a warm and full sound with minimal distortion.

Must Check:diib Review : Maintain good SEO-SMO balance

At higher volumes (above 60%), the bass tends to dial down to prevent distortion, which is a common design choice in open-ear audio. While the mids and highs remain crisp and enjoyable, you may notice a loss of punch in the bass when you go louder. This isn’t a flaw; it’s simply how open-ear designs manage power and sound output. Despite this, the Nothing Ear (Open) still holds its own at loud volumes and doesn’t get harsh or shrill, which makes it one of the better-sounding open earbuds at higher output.

Nothing Ear (Open) Closeup

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fit plays a huge role in how these sound. Because there’s no silicone tip to guide the sound directly into your ear canal, the positioning of the drivers relative to your ears can affect the overall sound. If your ears are larger or shaped in a way that causes the earbuds to sit farther out, you might get a thinner sound. But if they sit snugly, the sound feels much fuller.

One standout feature is the Nothing X app, which offers excellent EQ customization. There are two modes, Simple EQ, which lets you adjust bass, mids, and treble quickly using an easy drag interface, and Advanced EQ, which gives you full parametric control across 8 frequency bands. If you enjoy fine-tuning your music experience, this feature is a big win. You can tweak each frequency to your liking, something even many premium earbuds don’t offer.

Nothing Ear (Open) Case

Also, if you try boosting the bass using the EQ, it works well at low volumes, but the effect diminishes as the volume increases due to built-in DSP limiting (to avoid distortion). So, for best results, enjoy your music at moderate volumes, where the balance of clarity and bass is at its peak.

Overall, the Nothing Ear (Open) makes a strong case for itself in the sound department. While it can’t match the isolation and deep bass of in-ear models, it excels in clarity, comfort, and customization, making it a solid choice for those who prefer open designs without compromising too much on audio quality.

Microphone Clarity and Call Quality

Similar to Sound quality, open-ear earbuds, call quality is usually not their strongest point, and the reason is also the same: design. They are what they are. However, the Nothing Ear (Open) does a good job in this area, thanks to its dual-microphone setup backed by AI Clear Voice Technology.

In quiet environments, the call clarity is exceptional. Voices sound natural and clean without any robotic effect or muffling. The microphones pick up speech accurately, making conversations smooth and effortless.

In noisy surroundings like busy streets or cafés, background noise is definitely present, which is expected with an open design, but your voice remains clear and easy to understand. The AI noise reduction seems to focus well on human voice frequencies, helping cut through distractions like traffic, crowd chatter, or even construction sounds. You won’t get complete isolation, but your caller won’t have trouble hearing you.

One limitation is that you can’t mute the microphone directly from the earbuds using the controls, which may bother some users during work calls or meetings. Still, this is a common trade-off with most earbuds in this category.

Overall, Nothing has done a solid job with the call performance of these earbuds. Whether you’re indoors or outside, the voice pickup remains consistently good, making the Nothing Ear (Open) one of the more reliable open-ear options for daily calling and video chats.

Connectivity

The Nothing Ear (Open) comes with Bluetooth 5.3, which ensures a stable and reliable wireless connection. It supports SBC and AAC audio codecs, which are perfectly fine for most users and compatible with a wide range of devices. While there’s no support for high-res codecs like LDAC or aptX, the overall audio quality and performance remain solid, especially for open-ear earbuds.

One of the useful features here is multipoint connectivity. This allows you to connect the earbuds to two devices at the same time, like your laptop and your phone. Switching between devices is fairly easy. Just pause the media on one device, and then play it on the other. It takes around 3 to 5 seconds for the audio to switch over, which is not instant but still convenient for multitaskers.

Another handy feature is the low latency mode, which is great if you play mobile games or watch fast-paced content. When this mode is turned on, it helps reduce audio delay, making sound and visuals more synchronized, especially important for gaming or quick-action videos. It may not be completely lag-free, but it definitely improves the experience.

Overall, the connectivity experience on the Nothing Ear (Open) is smooth, functional, and well-suited for daily use, whether you’re juggling devices or enjoying entertainment on the go.

Nothing X App: App Experience & Extra Features

The Nothing X app, available for both Android and iOS, is an essential companion to get the most out of your Nothing Ear (Open) earbuds. We’ve already touched on some of its features in the Sound Quality and Control sections, like EQ customization and gesture settings, but here’s a deeper look at what the app offers.

Nothing X app
Source: Nothing App X

Right from the homepage, the app gives you a clean and minimal interface that feels intuitive and responsive. You can instantly check the battery status of each earbud and the case, useful when you want to know whether it’s time to recharge.

In terms of audio customization, you get three EQ presets, plus two ways to tune the sound manually. The Simple EQ allows you to adjust bass, mids, and treble using an easy drag-and-drop style. For those who want more control, the Advanced EQ gives a 9-band parametric equalizer, complete with frequency adjustment and Q-factor control. This level of customization is rare, especially for open-ear earbuds, and offers great flexibility if you want to fine-tune your audio.

The app also lets you customize squeeze controls for both earbuds. You can assign single, double, and long-hold actions for playback, voice assistant, or volume changes. These settings are quick to access and easy to change.

Under the Settings tab (top right corner), you’ll find additional features such as:

  • Low-latency gaming mode
  • Multi-device connection settings
  • “Find My Earbuds” – which plays a loud beep from the buds to help you locate them

These little touches make the app experience well-rounded and thoughtful. While it doesn’t offer features like active noise cancellation, which isn’t expected in open-ear designs, the app more than makes up for it with how stable, clean, and practical it is. From sound personalization to useful extras, the Nothing X app elevates the user experience and is one of the better companion apps in the category.

Should You Buy the Nothing Ear (Open) Earbuds or Not?

Should You Buy the Nothing Ear (Open) Earbuds or Not?

If you’re someone who values comfort, design, and everyday convenience over deep bass and total noise isolation, the Nothing Ear (Open) might just be your next favorite gadget.

They’re extremely comfortable, lightweight, and stylish, perfect for all-day wear, even with glasses or over-ear headphones. The open-ear design means you stay aware of your surroundings, which is great for walking, commuting, or working from home. Yes, you’ll get some sound leakage at higher volumes, and no, you won’t get booming bass, but that’s the nature of open-ear audio.

Where it truly shines is in clarity, mid and high tones, and the level of control it offers through the Nothing X app. You can tweak the sound to your liking, use smart squeeze gestures, and even enjoy multipoint connectivity for switching between devices. Call quality is also solid, even in noisy environments.

On the downside, there’s no wireless charging, and sound isolation is naturally limited. Also, audiophiles or bass lovers might find it lacking, especially at higher volumes.

✔️ Buy if:

  • You want next-level comfort with stylish looks
  • You like staying aware of your surroundings
  • You value clarity, usability, and customization
  • You’re looking for a unique, conversation-starting gadget

Skip if:

  • You need strong bass or noise isolation
  • You prefer in-ear fit for immersive sound
  • You can’t compromise on wireless charging

So the outcome of our Nothing Ear (Open) Review in short is:

For casual listening, calls, and comfort all day long, the Nothing Ear (Open) is a smart buy, especially if you appreciate good design and tech that stands out from the crowd.
