Our Views on Raji: An Ancient Epic “Finally an Indian Gaming Saga”

Raji: An Ancient Epic : History says it all when Satan goes out of his ways, deities have to arrive to save its devotees. Wondering why I said this?

This is a saga of an Indian girl named Raji who is on a journey to a mystical world with the aim of saving her brother, on her way she battles against an array of demons with deities like Durga and Vishnu coming together in her favour.

The saga just discussed is nothing but the theme of a  console-quality adventure game solely inspired by Indian Mythology and invented by Nodding Heads Games from Pune. Currently streaming on Switch and it is also available for PC, Xbox and PS4 from 15 Oct 2020.

The ever first release was on18 Aug 2020, Raji is the debut of NHG and an answer to games like Prince of Persia and God of War. It’s not an easy fruit but is a struggle of months and is finally upon Nintendo Switch for gamers to experience a next level Indian version console quality game.

Being an Indian this review is a bit personal to me. Won’t waste a single minute. Reviews ahead!!

Our Views on Raji: An Ancient Epic

Keeping up to the essence of Indian origins, the audio-visual and landscape effects are the exact mimics of Indian battlegrounds, forts, tombs with sounds of folk instruments like sitar, tabla, bansuri, ravanhattha. Adding up, the display of traditional clothing and ornaments like Payal on Raji’s foot. Also, Indian armours like ‘trishool’ are used in the game.

Temples, grottoes and fortresses built amid mountains, demons giving glimpses of ‘Asurs’, screen cuts managed beautifully by either shadow puppets or replaced entirely by the emergence of the huge murals in the game itself and last but not least there is a narrative reciting conversation between Vishnu and Durga over Raji.

Raji is just a virtual re-incarnation of the amazing mythology we as Indians have grown up obsessing with. The charm of this game is irresistible which will leave us with no option but stay tuned to it for hours.

Raji – An Ancient Epic : The Ultimate Gaming Experience

Battle provokes!! Devils must die and the innocent must be rescued, the concept is straight though Raji has portrayed all familiar things in a fresh ‘Avtar’. The story is straight forward, Raji – the lead, is an orphaned circus performer whose younger brother has been kidnapped, on her journey to rescue her brother she finds herself a part of the war between devil and deity. The path to her brother is not at all easy, it has many unfortunate hurdles and combats with Asurs.

As evident, the player is the Raji here, living all the experiences of this obnoxious journey, ancestral fortresses, grottoes, temples, battles with Asurs, quests (one after other) and eventually victory over evil. She is armed with weapons like trishool which unlocks during the course of her journey. If unarmed, Raji is still a warrior on her own two feet, if she springs from the wall or backflips from the pillar she can finish the smaller enemies with just a few clicks (hypothetical reference). Keep moving is the key, in Raji’s world halt means defeat.

Streaming Language

Raji-the-game

Some think that the game is losing its authenticity as it is in English. The large chunks of the narrative are in English with some parts in Hindi. Though Raji suggests subtitles in Spanish, French, Korean, Russian and Mandarin. Language can be forgiven as it is acceptable from the business point of view.

Summing Up

Raji is the perfect blend of Hindu and Balinese Myths and Cultures.
